Ways to Improve Creativity at Workplace

It was Bill Gates who said that his best employees were the laziest ones because they always found the easiest way to get the job done. Clearly, he was amazed by how individual behavior could beget about such efficiency, hence we learn from him that creativity in the workplace allows improvements. As a manager, you must not just talk about being creative; you must encourage your workers to be creative. If an organization doesn’t allow room for this in its culture, then it is likely to lose a competitive edge.

Creativity also gives free profits. You require no investment except support to employee and in return they are motivated and willing to offer you their best. So how does one improve creativity in the workplace?

      Create A System

Include creativity and self perception into the organization’s culture. If creativity in work and assignments is what you want then there is no better way than to keep it as a core value in your company. Managers allowing employees to give feedback and inputs on company goals really help them understand the work better. Sales reps can develop much better ways to intrigue the customers since they’re the ones dealing with them on a daily basis. What better source is there then?

Education has nothing to do with creativity. It is simply a person’s different approach to the same point of view. All managers have to do is allow their workers to give their input for the assignment, these inputs could help managers point out problems they never even saw coming and the employee that saw it coming probably have a better way dealing with it than others. If all companies approached the problem in the same way, then who has the competitive edge?

      Allow Space For Freedom

Instead of giving assignments with restricted guidelines and instructions, inform the employee of the ultimate goal for the assignment and ask them to do whatever it takes to get the job done. You can always supervise the worker to assure they are not going out of line or breaking any rules which hence gives you the authority. You just need to trust the employees that they will deliver. This way the employees feel motivated and recognize that they have authority and power on the work they do.

      Encourage Team Work

Sometimes the most productive and creative work comes from team assignments. Most companies in the information technology industry only operate in teams. HP assigns the creation and development of each product to teams from different departments and the team is responsible for the success of the product. The result: every employee from his respective specialized field works with other specialties and brings in valuable and unique knowledge on the floor. The success depends on how well all employees work together and the floor simply brings in new and fresh ideas and perspectives from every angle.

In short, as a manager only you can bring in creativity in the work environment and foster it. The more authoritative you are, the lesser room there is for creativity because only freedom allows creative ideas to surface. Not all ideas are creative or even effective but that is the job of the manager to use his years of experience to properly polish the idea of the employee and eventually train the employee to see the bigger picture.

      Improving your Time Management

Time management is the ultimate art which once mastered can prove to do wonders for any human being. For busy workers and managers, effective time management can be very fruitful and healthy. Of course the art is not easy to master and is even more difficult to maintain. The key is to manage and divide your time effectively allowing yourself time to breath and rest. A busy schedule with no time to rest is bound to lead you to fall behind. We are not always energetic and the body as well as the brain needs breaks to perform at its maximum potential. Effective time management is a primary means to a less stressful life and is most profitable. Here are some tips and means to effective management.

      Create A Plan

Always have a scheduled plan for your daily routine. Get up early in the morning and sleep on time in the night. Rest is a must part of the schedule and you cannot cheap out on it. The daily body requirement for sleep is 6-8 hours a day and hence, on your 24 hours day plan, this time is booked for rest. You can take it in breaks like 6 hours in the night and 2 hours of sleep in the evening. Also allow time for nutritious diet. Three meals a day is mandatory for healthy living.

      Create Information Centers

Where is your plan written or scheduled? What determines your daily activities? Usually we gather our daily assignments from work, then from home and then what ever we want to do for ourselves. These assignments are collected from information centers like an e-mail, your mom leaving a post stamp on the fridge or your phone messages. Hence, the lesser the information centers, the more easy it is for you to look for assignments or chores to do. If you have multiple e-mail ids, forward them to all to one so you know where to look, write down all the things to do (from post stamps, phone texts, messages, family, etc.) in one source, maybe a notepad or the to-do-list app on your phone (task manager).

      Prioritize Your Tasks

Figure out what tasks must be done first and what must be done later. Leave the important once to be done first and the less significant tasks for a later time.

      Strike Down Work When Complete

Once you’ve completed the task, strike it off your work list so you don’t get confused. Keep yourself updated, as in make sure your e-mail and list is updating because sometimes some work might need to be delayed and that saves you time for other important work to be done.

      Target To Be Early

If you can, then keep your watch clock five-ten minutes ahead. This way you’ll always be 5-10 minutes ahead of schedule and your work will always be on time.

      Focus

All work can be completed easily, early and effectively if you keep focusing on the job. Worrying if you’re on time can be distracting and reduces the quality of your work despite you being early, so focus on quality rather than on time otherwise you’ll mess up your entire schedule.

      Delegate

If you’re a manager you probably have many subordinates working for you. Even if you’re not you have colleagues and family. Delegate to them as much work as you can if you know they can handle it. This takes a lot of burden off your shoulders and you can concentrate on your work.

      Eliminate Your Time Wasters

Avoid distractions or anything that wastes your time. Standing at the electronics store watching TV is a waste and so is arguing on facts you are not completely aware of. Most time is wasted travelling. Center your location so you are equally distant to all your work.

Evaluate How You’re Spending Your Time

At the end of the day evaluate your schedule and see what improvements you can make on them for tomorrow. See where you can peg time for tasks and where you need breaks if you get tired and restless.
Time management is really an art and any well planned individual tends to gain more than any unplanned individual.

      Top 10 Leadership Qualities

Although it is famously said that leaders are born, not made, the fact of the matter is that leadership, like all other qualities is also something that can be developed into an individual. Likewise, there are certain qualities and traits that are common to individuals commonly perceived as leaders, Although it is easiest if an individual has those qualities naturally, there is no doubt that they can also be developed and nurtured in a person.

      Having A Purpose

All leaders know exactly what they want and have a clear sense of vision of how to get there. Only if you can clearly and exactly know what you envision for the future, and have an exact sense of your goals and purposes can you actually chart a way of getting there.

      Decision Making

A good leader is not afraid of taking decisions, even though he knows that the actions of others, and their success and failure will lie on him. Taking the initiative to make a decision is what allows leaders to step forward, take action and work towards the goals.

Not Afraid To Take A Risk

All good leaders know that their every action will not be a success; however they do not allow this to hold them back from taking action or making a decision. If you make a decision, there is a chance you will fail, but if you don’t, there is a guarantee that you will. As a result, taking no risks is the sure way to getting no gains, and no real leader should be afraid of taking a risk.

      The Power To Motivate

A good leader is nothing without a strong team, and it is a fact that a strong leader is well aware of. Therefore, to be able to get the right course of action, leaders need to know how to motivate their team and taskforce towards working on that goal, and thereby succeed.

      Working In Teams

Again, a good leader is nothing without a strong team to take support and help from. There is a subtle difference between a strong leader and a dictator, and in the long run only the former can be truly successful.

      Strong Sense Of Self-Knowledge

To have a strong understanding of one’s capabilities and limitations is another important feature for all leaders to possess. Only when one truly understands their weaknesses can they use their strengths to work past them.

      Honesty And Character

All good leaders must be prepared to be accountable for their actions. A leader has strong followers only if they truly trust and respect him, and that arises out of complete honesty and integrity only.

      Constant Learning

Like all successful people, leaders know that they have as much to learn as they have to teach. One can learn from the simplest of men and that is not a fact that should be taken lightly.

      Good Communication

Explaining your ideas to your followers is an important quality in a leader, as is being able to effectively convince others of your aims and visions. Hence, it can be said that communication is one of the key aspects to good leadership.

      Helpful

And finally, all leaders should know the importance of helping others. Whether just to help them reach their common aims, or help them develop their own, it is important that leaders always be willing to help others.

      Importance of Leadership Development

In order to carry any cause to the end, it is important that you have a leader to carry it through. For this reason, for any cause considered important enough to develop, nurturing leaders for the future is just as important. Organizations, businesses, countries and schools all need to ensure that they develop leaders good enough to not only understand what their leading cause might be, but to understand their importance and also understand how to develop these causes.

      Independence And Innovation

Leadership development is very important because without it a person might not have the means to carry his ideas through to the target that they deserve. We all have natural abilities and talents that point towards being a leader. A sense of independence, innovation and decision making are all the features of a successful leader, but most of us are taught to repress them and follow instructions. In the scheme of things this means hundreds of forgotten ideas and abandoned intentions, but if these qualities were developed, then there would not be one good mind to follow but rather hundreds.

      Cooperation And Compromise

Independence is the key to innovation, and unless a person is taught to value his independence, it is useless. Of course a good leader is not someone who does exactly what he or she wants – rather it is someone who has a purpose, develops the means to get to the end of that purpose, and then proposes the idea in such a way that people naturally agree with it and would want to work towards the same cause. A good leader listens to his followers, and takes in their input and suggestions with due importance. As a result, the idea of leadership in itself is an important one to develop, not the individual qualities that contribute towards being a leader.

      Leaders As Followers

Developing strong leadership qualities means having a strong, competent backbone of workers in the future. It means having a great sense of innovation and revolution, with people who understand the core values of all they have been taught, and know what they need to do to develop and extend those core values. For businesses and enterprises alike, it is important that all employees be followers and leaders at the same time, because it is that which leads to their success as independent thinkers and cooperative workers, both in coexistence.

To develop a sense of leadership in an individual is to assign them a sense of responsibility, for their own actions, for the purpose of the enterprise they work with and for the other individuals around them. In this regard, it is vital for any organization, whether on a personal level at home, or an economic level, that all individuals be treated and regarded as leaders. This would mean them having a strong sense of responsibility for the organization they are associated with, and in the future, would give them a better chance of leading an organization themselves.

To ensure sustainable leadership and a strong future, it is imperative that leadership skills be developed in all individuals in every stage of their growth and development.

      Difference between leadership and management

The difference between leadership and management:It’s NOT Paradoxical – It’s Definitional

The difference between leadership and management is actually quite simple. You manage things. You lead people. It’s amazing there is so much confusion and writing on this point.

Management is task-focused. It’s short term. It’s a series of checklists and “to do’s” that ensure the work gets done. It’s how we execute tasks to achieve a specific desired outcome. It’s taking actions to hit a budget number or deliver a project on time. Said most simply, it’s the movement of personnel, materiel, and tasks with an exact set of results in mind.

Leadership is people-focused. It’s the words said and actions performed to inspire something deep within another. It is the demonstration of a belief that others come before you and your only interest is their best interest. Leadership entails articulating a vision of something larger than all who are involved and helping those involved understand their role in achieving it. It’s providing the spark that fires someone’s drive to go take on seemingly insurmountable challenges because they believe in the desired outcome to the core of their being.

Leadership and management work hand in hand but truly are entirely different concepts.
